Episode 1 Notes

Posted on 8:42 AM by Steve

After listening to our debut episode of the Phillysportspost.com weekly podcast, I decided liner notes might improve our listeners’ experience, so here goes.

0:49- We barely miss out on setting a new record for “Earliest use of the word ‘Douche’ in a podcast.” The record is actually 17 seconds in, set by the C.B.Fleet Company, Inc. June 2007 marketing podcast entitled, “Promoting growth in the Summer’s Eve market share, despite a slumping economy.”

1:21- Insider secret: studio C is actually Steve’s bedroom.

1:43- These stats are in fact correct. The Sixers were 27-24 as of 2-15-09.

3:10- Seinfeld reference #1.

3:27- Heard great idea by ESPN’s Bill Simmons to land the Sixers Baron Davis and Marcus Camby. I love the thought, although I doubt it was realistic. Still, I think Baron is available, and I would offer Miller and a first round pick or two to get it done. Its gonna be an interesting week.

5:27- Borga is a former WWF wrestler from the 1990’s, more info is available at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludvig_Borga

6:05- Since Hextall was traded for Lindros before the 1992-1993 season; the Flyers starting playoff goaltenders are as follows:

* 1992-93: No Playoffs
* 1993-94: No playoffs
* 1994-95: Ron Hextall (10-5 in playoffs)
* 1995-96: Ron Hextall (6-6)
* 1996-97: Garth Snow (8-4), Ron Hextall (4-3)
* 1997-98: Sean Burke (1-5)
* 1998-99: John Vanbiesbrouck (2-4) (To be fair, he did have a 1.46 playoff GAA)
* 99-2000: Brain Boucher (11-7)
* 2000-01: Roman Cechmanek (2-4)
* 2001-02: Roman Cechmanek (1-3), Brian Boucher (0-1)
* 2002-03: Roman Cechmanek (6-7)
* 2003-04: Robert Esche (11-7)
* 2004-05: No Season
* 2005-06: Robert Esche (2-4)
* 2006-07: No playoffs
* 2007-08: Martin Biron (9-8)

10:38- Schilling actual spent time on the DL in both 1995 and 1996, but then averaged 202.7 innings, 15.67 wins, and 236.33 strikeouts over the following 9 seasons. So point made, eventually.

12:31- The Lito Sheppard theory was a joke in a meeting that didn’t make it to the podcast. The theory was that since Lito didn’t really play in 2008, he’ll be extra rested for 2009, and actually worth more than he was before the season.

12:56- The names I was searching for were:

· Joe Beimel- 5-1 with 2.02 ERA in 71 games for the Dodgers in 2008.

· Dennys Reyes- 3-0 with 2.33 ERA in 75 games for the Twins in 2008.

· Will Ohman- 4-1 with 3.68 ERA in 83 games for the Braves in 2008.

13:37- Obviously I meant the Yankees are likely to spend less than last season, despite their offseason spending spree, not more.

14:00- “Firm hand” signal was to make sure I was holding the mic steady, which is necessary to keep in the front of my brain due to the lack of a mic stand.

15:38- http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?mid=200810143619425 You want to skip to the video’s 3:50 mark for Stairs’ home run. Watching this video reminded me that Chase Utley’s diving into second base to complete an unassisted double-play with the bases loaded in the 7th was just as big a play as Stairs’ blast.

17:33- Seinfeld reference #2.

19:28- The website was http://www.thegiantkamala.com/ and Paul wasn’t kidding it is something. The song “Have a little drink of wine” is like a country song if all the music was produced with a keyboard you purchased at Family Dollar for $8.99. It’s like singing over an 8-bit Nintendo game's soundtrack.

20:03- Paul forgets his Kamala facts, fortunately Steve leads the witness, and we all learn Kamala’s fears.

22:05- TJ’s stats for the last two years:

* 2007: 112 catches for 1143 yards and 12 TDs.
* 2008: 92 catches for 904 yards and 4 TDs.

20:48- Steve asks for 1 biggest need, I say I have 2, then give him 3. I really need to stay on point; we’ll work on that in the future.

23:46- Boldin had 89 catches for 1038 yards and 11 TDs. Not bad guestimating by Steve.

29:38- Lorenzo Booker was acquired in exchange for a fourth round draft pick.

30:55- Steve and I spent the 15 minutes directly before the show recording and dubbing that intro, yet just a half hour later I have completely forgotten about it.

32:02- Off the top of my head here’s a few others, I blame Borat because they are all comedies I’ve seen since Borat two years ago.

* Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
* Forgetting Sarah Marshall
* Borat
* Zak and Miri make a porno
* Stepbrothers (Sort of)
* Harold & Kumar 2 (This is from the website videoadrenalin.com, I have yet to see this film.)

35:13- I respect James Cameron, I just think his films never allow me to get fully immersed in the world they are presenting, because the dialogue sounds contrived and hokey. It’s just not how people talk in the real world. Tim Burton I hate because being weird just for weirdness’ sake is stupid. What he does is lost on me, Planet of the Apes, Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Batman, and Sweeney Todd are the movies he’s made that I've seen. I only liked Batman, and that’s only a half-hearted like, I think it’s a very overrated movie. As for Peter Jackson, his movies are too long especially Return of the King and King Kong. King Kong was terrible, aside from a giant ape fighting T-rexes, that made the 10-year old boy in me jump to his feet. I feel I can’t complain about the LOTR movies because basically every complaint I had was covered in Clerks 2, and it just seems like I’m using somebody else’s opinions, although I came to them on my own.

36:03- Here’s the story from Wikipedia:

On August 5, 1987, Broderick was in Northern Ireland, vacationing with Grey, when their rented BMW veered into the opposite lane of a country road in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh and smashed head-on into a car driven by Anna Gallagher, 30. She and her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63, died instantly.
Broderick, who had not been drinking, spent four weeks in a Belfast hospital with a fractured leg and ribs, collapsed lung and concussion. Grey suffered minor injuries.Broderick told authorities he had no recollection of the crash and did not know why he was in the wrong lane. "I don't remember the day. I don't remember even getting up in the morning. I don't remember making my bed. What I first remember is waking up in the hospital, with a very strange feeling going on in my leg," he said at the time.
Broderick was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and faced a prison term of up to five years. He was later convicted of the lesser charge of careless driving and fined £175. The victims' family called the case "a travesty of justice."
Broderick agreed to meet with the family of the two women in the Spring of 2003 so that the family could gain some sense of closure on the accident.

He was on the wrong side of the road, but I don’t know the particulars so I'll reserve being overly critical, at least he wasn’t drunk.

36:22- Read about Little here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/thenetwork/news/2000/01/27/cnnsicomprofile_little/ Explain to me how manslaughter gets 90 days in a halfway house, yet dog fighting gets 2 years in Leavenworth. I feel Vick got at the very least what he deserved, I only bring it up because Little’s crime is worse, he killed a wife and mother for heaven’s sake. On “Oz” Beecher did the exact same thing and got 15 years, not to mention raped repeatedly by Verne Schillinger. At the very least we should break both of Little’s arms and legs like Keller did to Beecher, and before you say that I’m too harsh on Little please take note of this story: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/rams/2004-04-26-little-charged_x.htm That’s right! Little was caught driving drunk again just four years later!

I hope these notes were informative, and aided you, the reader, in your enjoyment of this week’s show.
